At Silent Sounds, we value both equally, but it’s important to understand their unique roles to ensure the right service is provided every time.
Interpreting – The spoken word in real time
Interpreting is the spoken transfer of meaning from one language to another, performed in real time. Interpreters work in dynamic, fast-paced environments such as medical appointments, courtrooms, or conferences.
Face-to-face interpreting role requires exceptional listening, memory, and communication skills, as well as the ability to process and relay information accurately under pressure.
Interpreting is not simply repeating words, it’s about conveying tone, intent, and emotion with cultural sensitivity and precision. This service must always be carried out by a qualified interpreter who has been trained to manage complex and sensitive communication effectively.
Translation – The written word with precision
Translation, by contrast, involves the conversion of written text from one language to another. Translators work with documents such as reports, letters, contracts, and medical records, ensuring that every word, phrase, and nuance is accurately reflected in the target language.
This process allows for research, review, and editing, meaning accuracy and clarity are paramount.
To request a translation, clients must submit a formal written request to our dedicated translations department at translations@silent-sounds.co.uk. Once received, your request will be assigned to a qualified translator with expertise in the subject area.

Although translators and interpreters work differently, they share a common goal; bridging language barriers and facilitating clear, accurate, and meaningful communication. Both disciplines require deep linguistic expertise, cultural understanding, and professional training, but the tools, techniques, and working environments differ greatly.
