How to start your journey as a skilled interpreter

Step 1: Fluency in English and another language

You’ll need strong communication skills in English and at least one other language. Many interpreters are native speakers of one language and have grown up using the other at home or in their community.

Step 2: Obtain the Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting

To work professionally with Silent Sounds and across most UK public sectors you will need the Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting (CCI).

This qualification provides:

  • A solid understanding of UK public services
  • Practical interpreting skills for real-world assignments
  • Professional ethics, confidentiality and impartiality
  • Sector-specific knowledge in health, education, welfare, and social care

It is the essential foundation for new interpreters entering the profession.

Where Level 3 Community Interpreting can take you

With a Level 3 CCI, you’ll be able to accept assignments across:

  • NHS Trusts and GP practices
  • Local authorities
  • Schools and colleges
  • Social care and safeguarding
  • Housing and welfare support
  • Charities and community organisations

In British Sign Language (BSL), the highest level of qualification is Level 6, which is required for working in professional settings. Learners typically progress through Levels 1 to 4 and, if following the vocational (NVQ) route, complete a Level 6 qualification. Alternatively, after completing Level 3 or Level 4, learners may continue their training via the university route by undertaking a three-year undergraduate degree, followed by a postgraduate interpreting qualification.

Important: Level 6 DPSI for legal interpreting

If you’re considering court, tribunal, or police interpreting in the future, you will need the Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI). This is an advanced qualification for those who wish to specialise in the legal field.
