If you’re bilingual and passionate about helping people, interpreting offers a purposeful and rewarding career. Here’s everything you need to know about becoming a community interpreter, and how Silent Sounds can support you from the very beginning.

Why interpreting is a meaningful career in today’s UK
Whether it’s helping someone communicate with their GP or ensuring a parent understands an important school meeting, your work makes a real difference. From NHS appointments to council services, the work is diverse and engaging. No two assignments are the same, and each brings new experiences, variety, and learning opportunities. Plus, there is a growing need across the country.
With over 250 languages spoken across the UK, demand for qualified community interpreters continues to rise. Silent Sounds works with clients across the country, providing regular, high-quality opportunities for interpreters in multiple languages.
Flexible working that suits your lifestyle
Many of our interpreters value the freedom to choose when, where, and how they work. Interpreting allows you to build a career that fits around other commitments, whether studies, family life, or another job. Another benefit of working as an interpreter in the today’s modern Britain, is that you can complete online video assignments, as well as face-to-face appointments.
How to start your journey as a skilled interpreter
Step 1: Fluency in English and another language
You’ll need strong communication skills in English and at least one other language. Many interpreters are native speakers of one language and have grown up using the other at home or in their community.
Step 2: Obtain the Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting
To work professionally with Silent Sounds and across most UK public sectors you will need the Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting (CCI).
This qualification provides:
- A solid understanding of UK public services
- Practical interpreting skills for real-world assignments
- Professional ethics, confidentiality and impartiality
- Sector-specific knowledge in health, education, welfare, and social care
It is the essential foundation for new interpreters entering the profession.
Where Level 3 Community Interpreting can take you
With a Level 3 CCI, you’ll be able to accept assignments across:
- NHS Trusts and GP practices
- Local authorities
- Schools and colleges
- Social care and safeguarding
- Housing and welfare support
- Charities and community organisations
Silent Sounds works with all these sectors, providing a wide range of interpreting opportunities for newly qualified professionals backed with Professional Indemnity Insurance for peace of mind.
In British Sign Language (BSL), the highest level of qualification is Level 6, which is required for working in professional settings. Learners typically progress through Levels 1 to 4 and, if following the vocational (NVQ) route, complete a Level 6 qualification. Alternatively, after completing Level 3 or Level 4, learners may continue their training via the university route by undertaking a three-year undergraduate degree, followed by a postgraduate interpreting qualification.
Important: Level 6 DPSI for legal interpreting
If you’re considering court, tribunal, or police interpreting in the future, you will need the Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI). This is an advanced qualification for those who wish to specialise in the legal field.
Step 3: Gain experience in real assignments
Once qualified, you can begin working with Silent Sounds and developing your professional practice. You’ll gain first-hand experience in a wide variety of settings, strengthening your terminology, confidence, and interpreting style.
