Challenge
A northern NHS Foundation Trust serves a diverse and geographically dispersed patient population, including communities across some remote and rural areas. For Deaf patients who use British Sign Language (BSL), accessing timely and appropriate communication support could present additional challenges, particularly where face-to-face interpreters were not immediately available or where travel distances could lead to delays.
The Trust recognised that accessible communication should not be dependent on a patient’s location. To uphold its commitment to person-centred, inclusive care, it was essential that Deaf patients accessing community services could communicate with healthcare professionals in real time and with the same dignity, understanding and opportunity to participate in decisions about their care as any other patient.
The challenge was therefore to provide a reliable, flexible and accessible BSL interpreting solution that could overcome geographical barriers and connect patients with qualified interpreters when and where they were needed.

Solution
Silent Sounds was tasked with helping the Trust bridge this gap, ensuring that distance and location did not become barriers to meaningful communication, informed decision-making or inclusive patient care.
To support the Trust’s geographically dispersed community services, Silent Sounds provided a flexible combination of on-demand BSL interpreting and face-to-face language support, enabling services to respond appropriately to the needs of individual patients.
For situations where immediate access to communication support was required, real-time BSL interpreting provided a practical solution, connecting Deaf patients with qualified interpreters without the delays and geographical limitations that can accompany travel to remote locations.
For urgent community needs requiring an in-person response, the Trust could access qualified face-to-face BSL interpreters through our dedicated Deaf Services team, alongside face-to-face spoken language interpreters for patients who required support in other languages.
This blended approach gave the Trust the flexibility to select the most appropriate form of communication support for each situation, whether that meant immediate remote access or the rapid deployment of an experienced interpreter into the community.
By combining on-demand accessibility with responsive face-to-face Deaf and spoken language services, Silent Sounds helped ensure that patients could access the communication support they needed, regardless of where they lived or how urgently that support was required.

Results
By combining on-demand BSL video interpreting with responsive face-to-face Deaf and spoken language services, Silent Sounds helps the Trust provide a more flexible and inclusive communication solution across its extensive community network.
Patients can access qualified language support in a way that reflects their individual circumstances, whether through video BSL interpreting or the rapid deployment of a face-to-face interpreter for urgent community appointments.
The blended service helps reduce the barriers created by geography and distance, particularly for patients living in remote and rural areas. Crucially, it supports Deaf and non-English-speaking patients to communicate more effectively with healthcare professionals, better understand information relating to their care and play an active role in decisions affecting them.
For the Trust, the solution provides confidence that accessible communication support can be delivered when and where it is needed, helping to reinforce its commitment to person-centred, inclusive healthcare.
