Breaking barriers, building community: Our ‘Without Limits’ charity Zumbathon for NDCS

At Silent Sounds, we believe that communication should never be a barrier to inclusion, and our recent ‘Without Limits’ Charity Zumbathon was a powerful testament to that mission. In collaboration with Chesham Zumba Fitness, our team came together to support the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) an incredible charity working tirelessly to ensure that no Deaf child is left behind.

From day one, our planning for the charity Zumbathon for Deaf children was driven by more than logistics- it was powered by purpose. We wanted to create an inclusive, joyful experience that celebrated deaf awareness, promoted accessibility, and raised vital funds for NDCS’s life-changing work with Deaf children, siblings, and families across the UK.

Turning vision into reality in our charity Zumbathon for Deaf children

Event preparations kicked off with a strong partnership between our dedicated Silent Sounds volunteers and the energy-filled team at Chesham Zumba Fitness. With Eventbrite helping us gauge interest, we kept a close eye on bookings to determine the ideal venue size. As numbers steadily grew, we made the eleventh hour call to use Chiltern Hills Academy’s main hall with stage- an inspired decision that set the stage for an unforgettable afternoon.

A celebration of community and communication

By 1pm, a lively queue of Zumba enthusiasts snaked towards the entrance, the sun catching the purple NDCS balloons, banners, and bunting decorating the venue. Inside, the vibrant atrium buzzed with activity from a Deaf awareness table featuring the fingerspelling alphabet to basic sign language lessons led by our very own Osman from our Deaf Services department. These small but significant moments reminded us how bridging the communication gap can empower and connect communities.

Representing the NDCS, Lisa and her daughters brought warmth and insight, engaging visitors with information, stories, and a shared commitment to inclusivity.

Dance without limits

The charity Zumbathon for Deaf children officially kicked off with a warm welcome from Chesham Zumba. Michelle of Silent Sounds energised the crowd with an overview of the event before inviting Lisa from NDCS and Councillor Justine Fulford, the Mayor of Chesham, to speak. The Mayor, wearing full Civic regalia, even joined in the dancing, proving that inclusion truly knows no bounds.

Councillor Justine Fulford said: “It was an absolute pleasure to attend the Zumbathon yesterday and to hear more about the work of the National Deaf Children’s Society and the sponsors, Silent Sounds. I loved seeing the crowds turning up and having so much fun raising a huge amount for the charity. I might even try Zumba again but will definitely make sure not to be wearing a pound and a half of civic bling when I do so! I love that there is such a generous spirit in Chesham, and that we turn out in droves to empty our pockets, and have fun doing it. Thank you for everything you did to galvanise that spirit with the Zumbathon, and thank you to everyone who took part and who also welcomed me so warmly.”

As the music took over, the hall came alive with colour, rhythm, and unity. Instructors from across Buckinghamshire and London each brought 20-minute bursts of energy, style, and music from all corners of the world ensuring everyone regardless of ability or background could participate, move, and feel welcome.

Even a government-issued mobile alert test couldn’t disrupt the joy as dancers kept moving, fuelled by the electric atmosphere.

Food, fun, and fundraising

Throughout the day, cakes, samosas, spring rolls, raffle tickets, and Zumbawear flew off the tables. A generous raffle lineup featured prizes from local businesses including Pro Body Therapies, What You See and Hear, Champneys Pilates instructor Mireille, The Bun Squad, and many more. Community support was evident in every donated prize and every ticket sold.

At the close of the event, Michelle proudly announced that we had already raised an incredible £1,607 – a number that left us inspired and grateful. As the crowd cooled down with a final dance and raffle winners were drawn, smiles filled the room, and a strong sense of community spirit was in the air.

A milestone moment

Back at the office on Monday morning, we finished counting donations and were thrilled to announce a final total of £1,772.20 far surpassing our original target of £1,000.

But beyond the numbers, this charity Zumbathon for Deaf children was about something deeper- a shared belief in a world without communication barriers. Through movement, music, sign language, and smiles, we demonstrated how inclusion isn’t just a goal it’s a practice.
